Exumer – Death Mask Messiah: A Dark, Ferocious New Chapter in Thrash Metal

German thrash metal veterans Exumer return with their new album Death Mask Messiah – a record that refuses to simply look back with nostalgia, instead pushing the band's distinctive sound forward with renewed intensity.

The Exumer flame was first sparked in Frankfurt in 1985, during the emergence of the German thrash metal underground. The band's first demo, A Mortal in Black, arrived in 1985, followed by their now-classic debut album Possessed by Fire in 1986. After the end of Exumer's first era, the band remained silent for almost two decades before returning in 2008. The decision was clear: Exumer would not simply recreate the glory days of their youth. If the band was going to return, it would be as an active thrash metal force, dedicated to its craft and looking firmly toward the future.

That philosophy continues with Death Mask Messiah, Exumer's sixth studio album and their first full-length release since 2019.

Relentless, Modern Thrash Metal

Death Mask Messiah is a 42-minute assault of muscular modern thrash metal, built around razor-sharp riffs, powerful guitar leads, pounding drums and the fierce vocal performance of Mem V. Stein. The album combines Exumer's old-school approach with a more contemporary songwriting process.

The result is a record that retains the raw aggression of classic thrash while refusing to become a simple recreation of the 1980s. The songs are heavy and intense, but there is also a strong sense of hooks and memorable musical ideas running through the material. Exumer manages to maintain its brutal foundation while giving the album enough dynamics and character to stand on its own. The production also retains an organic feel, something Stein attributes to the band's hybridized but fundamentally old-school approach to writing and recording.

A New Lineup, the Same Exumer Identity

Death Mask Messiah also introduces two new members to Exumer's recording lineup.

Bassist Alex Voss and drummer Jerome Reil provide a formidable rhythm section beneath the guitars of Ray Mensh and Marc B. For Marc B., the album also represents an important new chapter. He wrote two songs for the record: “Frozen Ground” and “Ravishing Waste.” Recording sessions were completed in January 2026, with Rizk handling the mixing and mastering during the following month.

More Than Just a Thrash Metal Record

Alongside its musical aggression, Death Mask Messiah explores dark and highly relevant themes. Mem V. Stein's lyrics examine power, manipulation, social division and solidarity. The album's central imagery revolves around people who use power and influence through fear, manipulation and carefully constructed masks.

The record also draws parallels between contemporary American politics and the 1993 siege at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, examining questions surrounding leadership, information and manipulation. But Death Mask Messiah does not stop there. Stein also addresses the endless culture wars that continue to divide people and argues for genuine solidarity while rejecting the nihilism that can become increasingly tempting in difficult times. At its heart, the album is also a statement about the importance of creativity itself. Art matters. Music matters.

A New Beginning for Exumer

Stein describes Death Mask Messiah as a “second spring for Exumer” – a period in which everything comes into bloom and a new beginning emerges. It is a fitting description for a band whose history reaches back to Frankfurt in 1985, but whose current identity is not built simply on past achievements.

Exumer has no interest in releasing albums merely because an arbitrary schedule demands it. Instead, the band wants to create music when it genuinely has something to say. Death Mask Messiah feels like exactly that kind of record: an album that does not attempt to take Exumer back into the past, but demonstrates where the band stands today.
